Keeping down the locals...

We've always been an awkward lot ! The Romans first had to subdue our lads, the Brigantes. Later on, Angles, Saxons, Danes and Vikings all fancied the area - and who can blame them ? By this time we were calling ourselves "English". Then came the beastly Normans who became so incensed at our behaviour that in 1069 they laid waste all the land and property between Durham and York. Yes, we won't forget the "Harrying of the North ". Naturally, later on, we had the Scots to contend with.

Escape to the Lakes...

Once height is gained, the world is once more much the same as it was when I first came to the Lakes, (some little time ago !)

The Howgill Fells

Between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales is a wonderful area of ancient Silurian and Ordovician rocks - superb walking !
